Select Committee Inquiry
1 Dec 2014
Funding the Royal Botanic Gardens evidence hearing
Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (Select)
Not accepting submissions

Although Nick Clegg announced on 3 September 2014 that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will maintain current funding until the end of the 2015 financial year, funding beyond this is unclear.

The ability of Kew to maintain its reputation as an institution at the forefront of botany has been called into question by GMB regional officer Paul Grafton, who said Kew "faced a significant threat to its future" as many of the 125 projected job losses would be in the science directorate.

Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, said:

"Kew Gardens is a Heritage Site and world-renowned centre for botanical research and like many government-sponsored bodies is being asked to justify its funding and look for possible cuts.

We intend to look at the evidence behind Defra’s budget cuts, Kew’s response to that and the potential impact of both on Kew Gardens’ future as a research and education facility."

The Committee will consider during its evidence session topics such as:

  • What makes Kew a pioneering institution in its field?
  • Is the government failing in its duty to adequately resource a National Heritage site?
  • What is Kew Gardens doing to increase its commercial success and keep operational costs low?
  • Was the reduction in funding from Defra, evidence based and focussed on Kew’s world class research status?

Although the committee is not formally requesting written submissions, it is happy to receive correspondence via email on the matter from interested parties.

Mitochondrial Donation - One-off evidence session
Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (Select)
Not accepting submissions

Following public consultations, an ethical review by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and scientific reviews by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Government has decided to proceed with putting regulations before Parliament for the introduction of mitochondrial donation. The Science and Technology Committee held a one-off evidence session to consider the science of mitochondrial donation on Wednesday 22 October when they will hear from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health, Jane Ellison, and experts in the field.

Announcing the one-off session, Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, said:

“It is right that the safety and efficacy of mitochondrial replacement techniques are subject to scrutiny in the House. As the Science and Technology Committee, we consider it important that we take the opportunity to scrutinise further the scientific evidence on mitochondrial donation”.

Pfizer’s closure of its research and development facility at Sandwich
Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (Select)
Not accepting submissions

The Committee decided to hold oral evidence on Pfizer’s decision to close its research and development facility at Sandwich in Kent. Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, said:

"Life sciences have been identified by both this and the last Government as a priority in the UK. Pfizer’s announcement that it will be closing its research and development facility in Kent is deeply worrying. It is not only a cruel blow for the Pfizer employees—many are highly skilled—but it also raises questions about UK plc’s ability to use science to drive the economy. My Committee is contacting Pfizer and David Willetts MP. We have urgent questions that need answering."

Having heard all the oral evidence the Chair wrote to David Willetts on 16 March. The Minister replied on 25 March (PDF 55 KB). The Committee did not publish a report.
