Sad news about Austin Mitchell. I knew Austin long before I was an MP and worked with him on Save Britain’s Fish. He was a different political colour but fought the fight for the Fishing Industry with honour. I had a lot of respect for him. RIP Austin.

Really sorry to hear of the sad passing of Austin Mitchell. Austin was not just a determined fighter for his constituency but also became a brilliant advocate for so many campaigns to right wrongs & tackle injustices. We will so miss his warmth & wit. https://t.co/OOU8pUuJZX

Very sorry Austin Mitchell has died. My husband grew up in Grimsby and has fond memories of him. A few years ago Austin came to a little cinema in Armley to introduce The Damned United and tell stories of interviewing Don Revie & Brian Clough… Thoughts with Linda and family.

Austin Mitchell served the people of Grimsby for 38 years - he was passionate about the local fish, even changing his name to Austin Haddock. He was much loved across Labour and Parliament, a passionate advocate of many causes and superb photographer. He will be greatly missed

Very sorry to hear on BBC news of the death of the former Great Grimsby MP, Austin Mitchell. Austin will be fondly remembered by so many of us, but esp in Iceland, when he spoke up for them when Chancellor Brown, wrongly used terrorist legislation against Iceland in 2008. RIP

I'm saddened by the death of Austin Mitchell who served Great Grimsby with remarkable commitment for 38 years - even changing his surname to 'Haddock' to promote local industry. His sense of humour was matched by his deep Labour values. My thoughts are with his wife and children.

Austin Mitchell was a super guy, a former broadcaster, who often made his independent minded views known. He and I got on well in the House of Commons. #RIP https://t.co/a8zsBM9h1H
