Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many and what proportion of staff employed by his Department are employed on a contract which is (a) full-time permanent, (b) part-time permanent, (c) for less than two years' duration, (d) on an agency basis and (e) zero-hours.

As at 20 April 2017, 37,456 civilian staff were employed by Ministry of Defence. The number and proportion of civilian staff employed on:

  • full-time permanent contract is 32,530 (86.8%)
  • part-time permanent contract is 3,920 (10.5%)
  • a fixed-term contract of less than two years' duration (both full and part-time) is 300 (0.8%)
  • on an agency basis 706 (1.9%) (at 31 March 2017)

The Ministry of Defence does not employ individuals on zero hours contracts.
