Respite Care for Vulnerable Adults: Teesside

"My hon. Friend is making a powerful case. Does he agree that this country needs to be doing a great deal more to support carers? I think back to the 1997 Labour Government, when national insurance contributions towards carers’ pensions were introduced. Is there not a case for looking at …..."

Written Question
Dementia: Research
Monday 18th April 2016

Asked by: Susan Elan Jones (Labour - Clwyd South)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what support the Government gives to fund research into Alzheimers disease and dementia.

Answered by Jane Ellison

Government funding for dementia research doubled over the last Parliament to around £60 million each year, and will be maintained at this level to total over £300 million in the period from 2015/16 to 2019/20.

The Government announced in the Spending Review that we would be spending up to £150 million on the United Kingdom’s first Dementia Research Institute. The Institute will cover the full spectrum of discovery science into age-related neurodegenerative diseases that have an element of dementias.

“Lib Dems …..."

Organ Donation

"It strikes me that the hon. Gentleman is saying that we have a choice – either presumed consent and no awareness-raising, or awareness-raising in the hope that that will generate more organ donation. From our nation of Wales, in the UK, we know that one person a week dies because …..."
