Written Question
Trial of Lunatics Act 1883
Monday 16th May 2022

Asked by: Theresa Villiers (Conservative - Chipping Barnet)

Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, if he will make it his policy to change the title of the Trial of Lunatics Act 1883 to the Criminal Procedure (Special Verdict) Act.

Answered by James Cartlidge - Shadow Secretary of State for Defence

The Trial of Lunatics Act 1883 uses outdated terms, and I am sympathetic to the request to change these.

It is not possible to formally amend the title of an existing Act, but it is possible to change the way to which the existing Act is referred. This requires primary legislation, so until a suitable legislative vehicle has been identified we are unable to look at this further.

" Some very impressive work is done by the charitable sector in supporting ex-offenders to deal with addiction problems. Will the Lord Chancellor ensure that his Department takes very seriously the importance of rehabilitation of offenders by enabling them to leave the substance abuse problems behind them, in the past?..."

Written Question
Paul Song
Thursday 15th March 2018

Asked by: Theresa Villiers (Conservative - Chipping Barnet)

Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice whether he has had discussions with the governor of HMP Brixton on the removal of Pastor Paul Song from his chaplaincy post at that prison; and if he will take steps to press for that pastor's reinstatement.

Answered by Rory Stewart

The decision regarding access to prisons for volunteers is a matter for HM Prison and Probation Service.

The decision of the Deputy Governor was re-examined by the Prison Group Director for London & Thames Valley when Pastor Song exercised his right to appeal against that decision. The decision was upheld.
