The UK has a proud record of providing protection for people who need it. But as the Prime Minister set out in his recent statement to Parliament (13th December), we must be able to control our borders to ensure that the only people who come here come through safe and legal routes. Those who need international protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. This is the fastest route to safety, and applies to all countries, regardless of their visa requirement.
