Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, pursuant to the Answer of 25 October 2017 to Question 108880, how many of the 10,000 planned new prison places will be (a) additional places that increase the total number of prison places or (b) replacement places for older cells no longer deemed fit for use.
The Government set out its ambition for a reformed prison estate in the November 2016 Prison Safety and Reform White Paper.
Our reforms will close down ageing and ineffective prisons and replace them with buildings fit for today’s demands. Our new prison estate will create the physical conditions for Governors to achieve better educational, training and rehabilitation outcomes. They will be built on a new for old basis.
