Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the merits of increasing the monthly cash allowance in line with inflation for people claiming asylum.

The cash allowance provided to asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute to enable them to meet their essential living needs is reviewed each year, using a methodology that was established in 2015 and which the courts have agreed is a rational approach. The annual review takes account of inflation since the previous review.

Following the most recent review, the allowance was raised from £36.95 per week to £37.75 per week, with the change implemented from the week beginning 5 February 2018.
