As at 31 January 2022, of the 2,318 permanent and temporary courtrooms in England, 990 are criminal courtrooms (Crown and Magistrates’ Courts and those of the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division). Of these, 575 (58%) contain secure docks.

The safety of staff, judiciary and court users is the top priority for HM Courts and Tribunals Service and we always make sure defendants are in secure docks when this is assessed as necessary.
