Question to the Department for Transport:
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, if he will bring forward legislative proposals to ban tolls on river crossings.
The Government has no plans to bring forward legislative proposals to ban tolls on river crossings. It is Government policy that those who benefit from the significant improvements that estuarial crossings bring should help to pay for them. Successive Governments have taken the view that tolls are justified when private finance enables key road infrastructure such as significant river crossings to proceed and to be maintained.
