Question to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what assessment he has made of the potential effect of trends in the use of electric and hybrid vehicles on the National Grid over the next ten years.

The Government will shortly publish a strategy on the transition to zero emission vehicles in the UK. This will include both electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The electricity system capacity market is the principal tool for ensuring that the UK has sufficient capacity to meet demand across the electricity system. Capacity secured in four-year ahead and one-year ahead capacity market auctions will be key in ensuring demand arising from a greater uptake of electric vehicles is met. National Grid use their evidence based Future Energy Scenarios (FES), incorporating latest trends in supply and demand (including from electric vehicles), when determining the volume of capacity to secure through these auctions.
