Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what proportion of people who were remanded on their first appearance appeared in court from police custody in the last twelve months for which data is available.
In 2017, of those who were remanded in custody at magistrates’ courts, 79% were held in custody by the police until their first court appearance.
However, the custody figures for police remand status and magistrates’ remand status comprise of defendants who were remanded at any point during the process not necessarily at first arrest or first court appearance.
