The government is committed to reducing the unnecessary duplication of data across the public sector. The General Data Protection Regulation and Data Protection Act came into effect in the UK in 2018 and enshrines key principles of purpose limitation and data minimisation in the processing of personal data. The government will publish in due course a National Data Strategy which will set out specific measures to improve government's approach to the handling and use of data.
