Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many defendants were granted court bail where the principal offence was (a) murder, (b) manslaughter, (c) robbery, (d) rape, (e) fraud and (f) violence against the person in each of the last five years; and how many people on court bail in each category of offence absconded.

The number of defendants granted bail in the period from 2013 to 2017, at both the magistrates’ courts and the Crown Court, for the offences of murder, manslaughter, robbery, rape, fraud and violence against the person, can be found in the attached table.

Absconding has been interpreted as those defendants failing to appear (FTA), as this is the best estimate we can provide from the data. The number of defendants recorded as FTA can be found in the attached table. The circumstances and reason for each FTA is unknown. Not all FTAs are due to defendants absconding. There are many reasons for a FTA and absconding is just one of them.
