Question to the Department for Business and Trade:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, what units in his Department were tasked with assessing deregulation opportunities from 1997 to 2016.

In 1999, the Regulatory Impact Unit in the Cabinet Office was established and had responsibility for coordinating all deregulatory and regulatory delivery across departments. The Better Regulation Executive (BRE) was set up in the Cabinet Office in 2005 and moved to the Department for Business, Energy and Regulatory Reform (BERR) in 2008. The Red Tape Challenge was a Cabinet Office-led initiative tasked with identifying deregulatory opportunities, which ran between 2011 and 2014.
