Question to the Ministry of Defence:
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to the Answer of 26 October 2016 to Question 49922 on armed forces: coroners, what differences there are with respect to coroner notification between a military organised repatriation and funeral from Scotland and organised repatriation of remains from other countries.
Where the death of a member of the UK Armed Forces has occurred in Scotland and where the family have requested the deceased body to be conveyed into England or Wales for burial or cremation, the arrangements are managed by the family appointed funeral director. This includes notification to the relevant English or Welsh Coroner.
Repatriation of a deceased member of the UK Armed Forces from any other country in the world back to the UK is managed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) through the MOD's Repatriation contractor. This includes the notification to the relevant Coroner.
In both circumstances the family of the deceased are always supported by MOD welfare teams.
