Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what the average custodial sentence length was (a) in total and (b) by sex of the offender for each category of offence in each of the last three years.

Information up to December 2018 on sentencing outcomes relating to specific offence categories is published in the “Outcomes by offence data tool” at: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/criminal-justice-system-statistics-quarterly-december-2018

To obtain the average custodial sentence length for each offence group:

• In the Pivot Table Fields, drag ‘Offence group’ to the Rows field.
• The average custodial sentence length can then be found in rows 472 - 484.

To obtain the average custodial sentence length by sex of the offender for each offence group:

• In the Pivot Table Fields, drag ‘Sex’ to the Rows field above the recently inserted ‘Offence group’.

The average custodial sentence length by sex of the offender for each category of offence can then be found in rows 1721 – 1771 for each offence group and corresponding sex.
