Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what estimate he has made of the number of recordings under s.28 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 in each year for which data is available.
Data provided to HM Courts and Tribunal Service show the number of recordings for Pre-Recorded Cross Examinations under section 28 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act (1999) in each year from 2020 onwards, as below:
Year | Number of Recordings |
2020 | 424 |
2021 | 2,117 |
2022 | 1,901 |
2023 (to May 23) | 1,102 |
Caveat - This data refers to those recordings made at Crown Court in the previous three years.
Data has been sourced from the technology supplier.
This data may include test recordings.
Witnesses may have more than one recording.
Recording data prior to 2020 was manually kept and is unreliable, automated reporting was introduced in 2020 for efficiency and quality control.
