Intermediaries were introduced in the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 to help vulnerable witnesses, including children, communicate their evidence during criminal proceedings. Though there are no plans to extend the use of Registered Intermediaries to other court proceedings, we are working with our partners in the criminal justice system to increase the provision and uptake of Registered Intermediaries.
