We are committed to delivering 14,000 additional prison places and aim to do so by 2031. Of these, around 3,300 places have been delivered since July 2024, and around a further 5,700 are under construction. The remaining places required to meet the commitment have secured planning permission where it is required. The new prison next to the existing HMP Garth was granted outline planning permission on 3 December 2024, with all remaining places having full planning permission, where required. No places needed to meet the commitment are yet to enter the planning process.
