Replacement windows usually benefit from permitted development rights and a planning application is therefore not required.

However, local planning authorities have planning powers to make an ‘Article 4 direction’ to remove a permitted development right where they consider doing so to be appropriate.

Replacement windows in listed buildings may require listed building consent if they affect the special historic or architectural interest of the building.
