Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many experiments were carried out by his Department on each animal species in the last 12 months.

Dstl returns the numbers of procedures involving animals to the Home Office on an annual basis in accordance with UK legislation. Figures for 2015 will not be available until after the returns have been made. Details of the Annual Dstl Returns to the Home Office for calendar year 2014 are given in the table.

Every procedure is undertaken in strict accordance with the terms of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986; and Dstl fully embraces the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement). Dstl Porton Down is licensed by the Home Office to conduct research involving animals.
