Question to the Department for Transport:
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment his Department has made of the potential merits of increasing funding for sustainable forms of transport to encourage more polluting vehicles to be removed from the roads.
Our recently published Transport Decarbonisation Plan set out the actions we will take to decarbonise private and commercial road vehicles, as well as increasing the share of trips taken by public transport, cycling and walking. This includes a £2 billion package of funding over five years for cycling and walking, £3 billion of transformative funding to level up bus services across England, tens of billions of pounds in enhancements and renewals of the rail network, and a £2.8 billion package of measures to support our ambitious phase out dates for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans. More sustainable journeys will deliver carbon reductions, as well as air quality, noise and congestion, which will be complemented by significant improvements in public health and wellbeing.
