Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what estimate his Department has made of the number of GPs to (a) be recruited and (b) retire in each of the next five years.

The Department does not collect this data centrally.

GP Workforce statistics have recently been published by NHS Digital and can be found here:

The Department has been working with HEE, NHS England, the Royal College of General Practitioners and the British Medical Association (BMA) General Practitioners committee to develop a skilled, trained and motivated workforce in general practice.

HEE’s Mandate requires them to ensure that 3,250 trainee doctors enter GP training programmes by 2016, with 5,000 additional doctors in general practice by 2020, enabling a further increase in the primary care workforce across England.
