Question to the Department for International Development:
To ask Her Majesty's Government whether the Department for International Development has provided assistance to countries where leprosy is prevalent (1) to train staff in leprosy detection and treatment, (2) to increase public awareness of leprosy and access to treatment, and (3) to promote stigma reduction, including the repeal of discriminatory legislation and improved provision of mental health support.
DFID funds civil society organisations such as the Leprosy Mission for England and Wales and LEPRA to diagnose, treat and support those afflicted with leprosy. Funded projects have targeted stigma and discrimination. DFID also works to strengthen health systems, which helps countries to prevent and treat causes of ill health, including leprosy.
