Question to the Department for Transport:
To ask Her Majesty's Government what is their response to the conclusion of the report of the National Audit Office Investigation into the Department for Transport’s decision to cancel three rail electrification projects, published on 29 March, that the main reason for the cancellation of rail electrification projects was affordability.
The decisions we have made about electrification mean passengers will benefit from faster journeys, more seats and better quality trains sooner, and with less disruption, compared with putting up intrusive wires and masts.
The Government has been open about the challenges in the current rail investment period on affordability and deliverability.
Additionally, we have been clear that all projects are subject to ongoing assessment, to ensure they deliver the best results for rail users and taxpayers.
