Scottish Parliament Written Question
S6W-26965
Thursday 2nd May 2024

Asked by: Choudhury, Foysol (Scottish Labour - Lothian)

Question

To ask the Scottish Government what assessment it has made of the adequacy of non-emergency kidney patient transport service provision for patients travelling to and from in-centre dialysis appointments across each NHS board, and when it made any such assessment.

Answered by Minto, Jenni - Minister for Public Health and Women's Health

The Scottish Government’s role is to set the strategic policy for the NHS in Scotland, NHS Boards are responsible for service delivery and treatment. All Health Boards should consider patient transport needs when they plan and deliver services and must ensure Patients have access to all information on any relevant patient transport (including community transport) and travel reimbursement entitlement.

Individual Boards are responsible for developing and applying their own policies, including determining eligibility and reimbursement rates, whilst ensuring patient care and safety.

A requirement has been placed within the NHS Territorial Boards annual delivery guidance to bring attention to the requirement for the Boards to consider transport to health for patients and ensure patients have access to information.

Written Question
Gaza: Humanitarian Aid
Thursday 2nd May 2024

Asked by: Tommy Sheppard (Scottish National Party - Edinburgh East)

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, what diplomatic steps his Department is taking to help increase access to medical care for children in Gaza.

Answered by Andrew Mitchell - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) (Minister for Development)

We are doing all we can to get more aid into Gaza by land, air and sea. A UK Med field hospital, funded by the UK, is up and running in Gaza. This facility is staffed by UK and local medics and has already treated thousands of patients.

We have provided targeted support for children through a £5.75 million contribution. This is supporting work to assist over 5,800 children with severe malnourishment and 853,000 children, adolescents and caregivers affected by the conflict to receive emergency and child protection services, including mental health and psychosocial support.

The Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister have also underlined the need for Israel to ensure effective deconfliction in Gaza, and to take all possible measures to ensure the safety of medical personnel and facilities.

Written Question
Hospital Wards: Females
Wednesday 1st May 2024

Asked by: Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne (Conservative - Life peer)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask His Majesty's Government how they plan to strengthen the privacy and dignity of female patients in NHS hospitals.

Answered by Lord Markham - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department of Health and Social Care)

The Government is committed to upholding the rights of women and girls and ensuring they are properly represented in healthcare services, communications, and guidance.

That is why we are currently consulting on updates to the NHS Constitution for England to shape the principles and values of the National Health Service and ensure the privacy, dignity and safety of all patients, including women, are embedded in how it operates.

Our proposed changes to the NHS Constitution reinforce the NHS’s commitment to providing single-sex wards and will empower patients to request that intimate care is carried out by someone of the same biological sex, where reasonably possible.
