To ask the Minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, what recent discussions he has had with HM Ambassador to Belarus on political prisoners in that country.

The UK Government is appalled by the brutal and ongoing repression that the Lukashenko regime conducts against its own people. There are nearly 1500 political prisoners in Belarus. The regime's repression and its support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine have limited our bilateral contact. However, the UK is clear about our solidarity with all political prisoners, when possible attending trials and engaging with their families. We have also raised this issue at the UN and The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). We will continue to take every opportunity to urge the Belarusian regime to immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners and protect the human rights of its citizens.

To ask the Secretary of State for for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, how many Chevening scholarships have been awarded to each country for awarded for the 2023-24 academic year.

Chevening operates in over 160 countries and territories. For the 2023-24 academic year, our budget of £57.7 million Official Development Assistance (ODA), £1.6 million non-ODA funding, and additional income of around £13.2 million from tuition fee-waivers and external partners allowed us to offer 1440 awards of which 1383 were from ODA funding and 57 from non-ODA funding. Attached is a table indicating numbers from each eligible country. For countries where we offered fewer than five places we withhold the exact number as this would contravene one of the data protection principles. In this case, Sections 40(2) and 40 (3A)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act apply.

The UK continues to condemn the Wagner Group's malign and destabilising impact wherever it operates.
We continue to monitor threats from a range of state and non-state actors, including the Wagner Group, working with and through our partners to protect our security against shared threats.
NATO maintains an appropriate force posture to ensure strong and credible deterrence and defence across the Alliance to protect and defend every inch of Allied territory.

There is growing evidence, confirmed by the Belarusian authorities and Belarusian Red Cross, that Ukrainian children are being sent to so-called "recreation camps" in Belarus. We are following closely the investigations launched by the Lithuanian and Ukrainian authorities into the nature of these child transfers, and the experience of children while in Belarus, including allegations regarding the political and military indoctrination of Ukrainian children. We call upon Belarus to ensure that no Ukrainian children are forcibly transferred to its territory, and continue to condemn Belarus's facilitation of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The UK stands in solidarity with the Belarusian people, who have shown immense courage in the face of relentless repression by the Lukashenko regime. We are clear that this regime neither speaks nor acts in the name of the overwhelming majority of Belarusians, and we continue to work with likeminded partners to put pressure on the regime publicly and privately for their human rights violations. We also take very seriously our responsibilities to Belarusian nationals in the UK, and the Security Minister's Defending Democracy Taskforce is driving forward work in response to threats of foreign interference, including transnational repression.
