The UK strongly endorses the President of Malawi's demonstrable commitment to fight corruption in Malawi. The UK provides technical assistance to Malawian law enforcement agencies, such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau, to help increase their capacity to pursue cases linked to serious corruption. We note and welcome the rapid response of Malawian institutions to respond to the arrest of the Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Martha Chizuma.

To ask His Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to ensure commitments are made for "loss and damage" payments to Global South nations at COP27; and what assessment they have made of the case for such payments given (1) the flooding in Pakistan, (2) communities in Fiji having to abandon their ancestral homes, and (3) Malawi productively using the loss and damage payment made by Scotland at COP26.

At COP26, the UK strongly supported the establishment of a 'Glasgow Dialogue on Loss and Damage' to discuss the arrangements for the funding of activities to avert, minimise and address loss and damage. The Santiago Network (a platform for catalysing technical assistance on loss and damage for developing countries) was also progressed through agreement on functions and funding. The UK actively participates in the Glasgow Dialogue and Santiago Network and looks forward to engaging on Loss and Damage at COP27, to build upon the progress made in Glasgow.

Though there are no plans at present to add Malawi to the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy Programme, the Department for International Trade is constantly reviewing suitable markets to identify where the appointment of a Trade Envoy can be of greatest benefit to the trade and investment aims of the UK.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what recent steps she has taken to support women’s access to contraceptive services in Malawi.

The UK is proud to defend and promote universal and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights.
The UK has supported 9.5 million women and girls to use modern methods of contraception since 2018 through the Women's Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) programme (2017-2024), which now works in 17 sub Saharan African countries.
While the UK does not currently provide bilateral support to women's access to contraceptive services in Lesotho or Botswana, the FCDO invests in a broad range of global SRHR programmes, including access to voluntary family planning, through the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Reproductive Health Supplies programme.

I am delighted to say that since polio was detected in Malawi in February the government there has led an incredible vaccination campaign, reaching 3.5 million children and covering the full target population. I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to the government and health workers of Malawi for such an incredible achievement. I had the huge honour of meeting the Minister for Health when I visited in April. We discussed the UK’s support for the wider sector and the challenges it faces.

The United Kingdom strongly opposes the death penalty in all countries and in all circumstances, as a matter of principle. We work through multilateral organisations, such as the UN Human Rights Council and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to raise concerns about the use of the death penalty, as well as through direct conversations with states that continue to retain the death penalty, including with the US, Saudi Arabia, China and Malawi.
