The FCDO recognises the importance of ensuring that all healthcare facilities have reliable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services. We support this goal through our membership of the WASH In Healthcare Facilities International Taskforce, and we push forward this agenda through our programmes including a hand-hygiene partnership with Unilever. We also support WASH in health facilities in Malawi through the 'Our Health' programme and in Nepal through the Resilient WASH and Emergency Preparedness Programme.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, whether he plans to visit the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal in the next 12 months.

The UK and Nepal share a long and deep history. Diplomatic relations were established in 1816, and the UK was the first country to formalise diplomatic ties with Nepal. I (Minister Trevelyan) , visited Nepal in March, where I marked 100 years since the signing of the Treaty of Friendship. The Foreign Secretary's travel plans over the next year are still being decided, but Nepal remains a uniquely close and valued partner in the Indo Pacific region. The UK will continue to commemorate this, especially in the centenary anniversary year of the Treaty of Friendship.

As of April 2023, we have donated more than 85 million vaccines to over 40 countries in need and offered over 100 million.

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, pursuant to the Answer of 15 March 2023 to Question 166379 on Health Professions: Migrant Workers, if he will make it his policy not to recruit health workers from Nepal.

In August 2022, the Government of Nepal and the Government of the United Kingdom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the managed and ethical recruitment of Nepalese healthcare workers to the UK. This agreement explicitly sets out that any recruitment must adhere to the UK’s codes of practice for the ethical international recruitment of health and social care personnel.
The MOU is signed on the basis that the active recruitment of health and care workers from Nepal to the UK will begin with an initial small-scale pilot to recruit up to 100 nurses over a period of 15 months. During the pilot, recruitment activities will be limited to one Trust and its partners. No other UK employer or recruitment agency should carry out active health worker recruitment activities in Nepal. This will mean the UK Government can monitor and ensure that all active recruitment through this MOU is done in accordance with the strongest ethical principles.

DWP holds data relating to the late and non-return of a Life Certificate for the 2019 period, which resulted in the temporary suspension of a customer’s State Pension payments. In 2019, 26,206 claims were temporarily suspended, which is broken down by country as shown in the following table: -

As a result of the outbreak of COVID in 2020, DWP suspended the Life Certificate exercise in March 2020, to ensure that our customers were not negatively impacted by any postal service issues which could have resulted in their State Pension payments being temporarily suspended. Therefore, DWP does not hold any data for this period.
DWP reintroduced the Life Certificate exercise in November 2021. Therefore, DWP does not hold any data for 2021, as any potential suspensions would be applied after 16 weeks of issue of the Life Certificate, which would mean that the suspension occurred in 2022.
The Management Information used has been taken from the same operational source data systems as our published administrative data. However, as this Management Information is not a recognised National or Official Statistic, it has not been subjected to the same level of Quality Assurance. As a result, these figures should be treated with caution.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, if he will make an assessment of the potential impact of replacing the tripartite agreement governing Gurkha terms of service with a bilateral agreement; and if he will make a statement.

The Tri-Partite Agreement 1947 has not been replaced but continues to provide the formal basis for the employment of the Brigade of Gurkhas (BoG) within the British Army. Since 2007 Gurkhas have served on the same basis as the remainder of the British Army apart from specific requirements to maintain the unique position of the BoG.
The UK and Nepal share an exceptionally long and unique partnership. We are committed to deepening our strategic partnership with Nepal and delivering our shared security and prosperity interests.

Department for Transport Ministers and officials hold regular discussions with airlines, airports and international partners to facilitate global connectivity.
It is for individual airlines to determine whether to take advantage of the rights and routes available to them within any air services agreement. Market conditions, such as the availability of indirect routing options, often affect the commercial considerations of airlines.

Collaboration with UK Government Agencies and other bodies is an important part of our relationship in Nepal. There are various agencies and other bodies working in Nepal or with the Government of Nepal. Those working in the country include the British Council, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, and BBC World Service. In addition there are organisations that are not based in Nepal but are engaged in work with Nepal. Those include the Chevening Scholarship Programme and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority. There are a number of other agencies who work with the Government of Nepal on an ad hoc basis.
