Some joined campaign groups, some joined parties. Many were inspired by my colleague and friend Charles Kennedy, and the @LibDems’ principled stand – hardly consequence-free – against war, when the media and political consensus (with plenty of vitriol) seemed impenetrable. 15/ https://t.co/Xps8Vz9H04

@LeonDuveen @libdemvoice Of course it’s ‘your right’ Its also a pillar of liberal democracy to have debates, & as Paddy Ashdown & Charles Kennedy often said, to allow freedom of speech & expression. Didn’t hear calls for people to be thrown out the party if they disagreed with quotas for BAME ppl.

@AdamBienkov John Nicholson also says that he condemns “Twitter pile-ons”, and which are clearly bullying behaviour. But SNP members have orchestrated some of them, including the attacks on the late Charles Kennedy who he defeated in 2015 with such tactics.

Brilliant. 18 years since I first heard him speak (the Democratic Convention in Boston where I went with Charles Kennedy). Obama understands, message, delivery and the need to illustrate his points effectively. @Shoutout_UK @nusuk @UKYP @SELDNYoungLibs @EdwardJDavey https://t.co/FtyaZoZkWH

@AlisonHarriso16 @TheScotsman @Ianblackford_MP @theSNP Hi Allie - the point I raised was the parallel between abuse of Keir Starmer in recent days and that meted out to SNP opponents in the 2014 and 2015 campaigns, particularly against Charles Kennedy. Labour leaders were mobbed in a very similar way as was reported at the time.

It was an unfounded accusation but one thrown with vigour at the late Charles Kennedy before he was eventually beaten by Ian Blackford. The nature of the campaign has never really had much airing though former MP Brian Wilson has written about it well. 4/ https://t.co/PQ0pNfGvkK

Sixteen years ago this month, I had the sad and difficult task of getting all the morning papers and preparing to ring Charles Kennedy to say that he couldn’t continue as Leader. I got the call first to say that Charles was resigning that day. Who is speaking to Boris Johnson? https://t.co/FVR2R10wQd

@mayerandrew @trussliz I’m not criticising her for changing parties but for changing her principles for self advancement. I’m as much a pro-European social democrat in the Labour Party as in the SDP. Tony Blair, Roy Jenkins, Charles Kennedy & Paddy Ashdown were in a progressive alliance until Clegg
