Written Question
Higher Education: North West
Friday 25th November 2016

Asked by: Jim McMahon (Labour (Co-op) - Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton)

Question to the Department for Exiting the European Union :

To ask the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, what assessment he has made of the potential effect of exiting the EU on higher education research and development in the North West.

Answered by David Jones

We have been clear that we want to create an environment in which the UK as a whole can continue to be a world leader in research, science and the tertiary education sector more broadly.

There is no immediate change to the rights of UK universities and their students and staff from EU countries. UK researchers can still apply for Horizon 2020 projects, with the certainty that any funding will be guaranteed by the UK Government for the cycle of the programme.

We are speaking to research institutes, regional and national groups and businesses up and down the country, to establish the priority issues and opportunities for the whole of the UK.

Question to the Department for Exiting the European Union :

To ask the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, what estimate he has made of the potential cost to the public purse of the Government's appeal to the Supreme Court on triggering Article 50.

Answered by David Jones

In line with other Government Departments, the Department for Exiting the European Union will pay its legal costs from its budget. As the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union said in his statement to the House on 7 November 2016, all those figures will be published in due course.
