Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what steps he plans to take to ensure that the proposed prison in Jamaica constructed with funding from his Department will meet international standards for the treatment of prisoners; what plans he has to monitor the human rights record of that prison once constructed; whether he plans to review the repatriation of prisoners if such standards are not met by that prison; and if he will make a statement.

Funding for the new prison in Jamaica will be transferred from the Department for International Development. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the UK and Jamaica states that the Government of Jamaica agree to ensure that the construction of the prison is compliant with international minimum standards for the treatment of prisoners, and the Government will monitor compliance with this.
