Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what proportion of people who appeared at a magistrates court were remanded in custody in the latest period for which data is available.

The Ministry of Justice publishes information on the proportion of defendants remanded in custody at magistrates' courts in England and Wales, in the Criminal Justice Statistics Quarterly publication. The latest data available, for year ending June 2023, can be viewed in Chapter 4 of the following report:
