The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s (NICE) quality standards and guidelines as a description of best practice developed through wide consultation with experts and stakeholders taking into account the latest evidence. As best practice, public sector organisations should take them into account in the care and treatment of patients, but they are not mandatory.

All published guidance is subject to regular review; the NICE guideline Autism spectrum disorder in under 19s: recognition, referral and diagnosis was last reviewed and updated in December 2017.
