In July 2020 a House of Lords Committee highlighted evidence that loot boxes cause gambling problems or exploit problem gambling, and called for the Government to extend gambling legislation to cover loot boxes. In September 2020 the Government called for evidence on this but has taken no action.

Extend the Gambling Act to cover Loot Boxes

I would like the government to extend the Gambling Act to cover ‘loot box’ systems from computer games so they are regulate in the same way as other forms of gambling. These systems can lead to gambling addiction and children spending too much money on these ‘loot boxes’ in games.

Video game companies avoid predatory Loot Boxes being defined as gambling on the technicality items received can't be redeemed for money despite clearly being gambling otherwise. Update the Gambling Act to include purchases providing randomized digital items even if they do not have monetary value.
