Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what assessment he has made of the implications for his policies of the potential economic impact of drought in Argentina; and whether the Government is providing support to the government of that country to help respond to the drought.
Answered by David Rutley - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office)
The UK Government maintains ongoing dialogue with the Argentine Agriculture Ministry and agricultural sector at senior official level and has facilitated cooperation between the UK's Agri-EPI Centre and Argentina's science authorities on drought-resistant crops. We have noted various estimates of the impact of the drought on the upcoming harvest in March/April and maintain discussions with Argentina over the potential impact on exports and GDP growth, and Argentina's ability to continue meeting the terms of its deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what assessment he has made of the implications for his policies of reports that the President Alberto Fernandez of Argentina congratulated President Xi Jinping of China Xi Jinping on securing a third term as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party describing him as an example for countries around the world.
Answered by David Rutley - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office)
The UK Government wants a broad, constructive relationship with Argentina, and we hugely value recent cooperation across areas such as health, climate and human rights. China's increasing international assertiveness and the growing importance of the Indo-Pacific will be among the most significant geopolitical and geo-economic shifts in the 2020s. We will require a robust diplomatic framework for this relationship that allows us to manage disagreements, defend our values and preserve space for cooperation where our interests align.

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, whether he has had recent discussions with his Argentine counterpart on the future supply of energy from Argentina to the UK.
Answered by David Rutley - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office)
Energy and climate issues form an important part of our wider engagement with Argentina. This includes our regular cooperation through the G20. We have worked in our capacity as COP26 President and bilaterally with Argentina to support their transition to clean energy, for example analysis of the opportunities in their renewable energy market, including discussions on green hydrogen. We have also supported Argentina in their quest to join the international lithium value chain through joint work that has contributed to the UK's Critical Minerals Strategy published earlier this year.

Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:
To ask His Majesty's Government how many cats have been imported this year under the Balai Directive; and from which countries those cats originated.
Answered by Lord Benyon - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office)
Since we left the EU, the EU import data for 2021 and 2022 was collated from PIMS which is APHA’s Post Import Management System and accounts for all Imports into the United Kingdom that have been entered using IPAFFS (Import of products, animals, food and feed system).
This information is drawn from the external IPAFF’s system not directly controlled by the department.
From 14th April 2022 the United Kingdom temporarily suspended the commercial import of dogs, cats and ferrets if they originated from or have been dispatched from Belarus, Poland, Romania or Ukraine, until 29th October 2022.

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what assessment he has made of the implications of of reports that Guillermo Carmona, Minister for the Falkland Islands, Antarctica and the South Atlantic in the government of Argentina, visited Colombia and Ecuador between 10 and 13 October 2022 to seek regional support for Argentina's sovereignty claim over the Falklands Islands.
Answered by Jesse Norman
As the UK reaffirmed at the Organisation of American States' General Assembly on 5-7 October, we have no doubt about our sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. We remain committed to the principle and the right of the Falkland Islanders of self-determination. They expressed their wish to remain a self-governing overseas territory of the UK in 2013. There can be no dialogue on sovereignty unless the Falkland Islanders so wish. In continuing to push its claim over the Falkland Island, Argentina is entirely disregarding the people who live there and their right of self-determination.

Asked by: Elliot Colburn (Conservative - Carshalton and Wallington)
Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what recent progress her Department has made on supporting LGBT+ communities in (a) low- and (b) middle-income countries.
Answered by Vicky Ford
As co-chairs of the Equal Rights Coalition (ERC), the UK and Argentina oversaw the adoption of the ERC's first strategy and five-year implementation plan in July 2021. Donor coordination is one the ERC's priorities and was discussed at the ERC Conference co-hosted by the UK in Buenos Aires on 8-9 September.
Plans for levels UK funding for the 2022-5 Spending Round are not yet confirmed, but we will continue to focus on low and middle income countries in the global south. In June 2022, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced £2.7 million of new UK funding to support LGBT+ grassroots human rights defenders, and advance equality and freedom across the Commonwealth.
