To ask His Majesty's Government what plans they have to offer incentives to UK business and industry to pursue new opportunities in the economy of South America, including clean growth and infrastructure.

My department is working tirelessly to ensure that the demand for UK expertise in South America’s clean energy transition and infrastructure development is capitalised on.
Recently, the Government supported the development of regulatory frameworks for offshore wind projects in Brazil and Colombia; signed three government-to-government public infrastructure contracts worth £2.5 billion in Peru; and, through UK Export Finance, supported hospital construction and aerospace projects in Brazil and Guyana.
UK businesses working on these projects and more enjoy preferential access under the UK-Andean Countries Free Trade Agreement and UK-Chile Association Agreement, which also benefit those pursuing new opportunities.

The UK places real value on our partnership with Peru. Our long-term commitment to the sustainable development of Peru is demonstrated through our Government to Government agreements focusing on the reconstruction and development of healthcare, education and risk prevention sectors, as well as our climate and trade partnerships. We are monitoring the situation in Peru following the impeachment of former President Pedro Castillo and will continue to hold an active dialogue with the new Peruvian administration under President Boluarte, including on human rights and values issues.

The UK Government has a significant dialogue with indigenous groups and environmental defenders in Peru. Officials at the British Embassy in Lima promote the rights of indigenous groups in Peru and support them in raising concerns. HMG regularly discusses the impact of climate change and environmental degradation with the Peruvian Government and these were core themes at our annual UK-Peru Political consultations in August this year.

Since we left the EU, the EU import data for 2021 and 2022 was collated from PIMS which is APHA’s Post Import Management System and accounts for all Imports into the United Kingdom that have been entered using IPAFFS (Import of products, animals, food and feed system).
This information is drawn from the external IPAFF’s system not directly controlled by the department.
From 14th April 2022 the United Kingdom temporarily suspended the commercial import of dogs, cats and ferrets if they originated from or have been dispatched from Belarus, Poland, Romania or Ukraine, until 29th October 2022.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps his Department is taking to help reduce the amount of plastic in the oceans.

The UK is committed to leading efforts to protect our marine environment, including fighting plastic pollution.
At the UN Ocean Conference in June, the OSPAR Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, which the UK is party to, launched the second Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter that sets out the action countries will take to prevent and reduce marine litter.
The UK is proud to have supported the proposal by Rwanda and Peru that led to the landmark resolution to start negotiating a legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution. To continue to drive progress, the UK became a founding member of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution through which we will strive for an ambitious treaty that will end plastic pollution by 2040.
The UK's Environment Act enables us to change how we manage our waste and take forward proposals from our Resources and Waste Strategy, including tackling plastic pollution.
To tackle pollution from frequently littered items we have restricted the supply of plastic straws, cotton buds and banned drinks stirrers, and with the introduction of carrier bag charges, the use of single-use carrier bags in England has reduced in the main supermarkets by over 97%.
Additionally, our ban on microbeads in rinse-off personal care products has prevented billions of these tiny plastic beads from entering the ocean each year. Furthermore, we have consulted on proposals to ban the supply of single-use plastic plates, cutlery, and balloon sticks, and expanded and extruded polystyrene food and beverage containers, including cups. The consultation response will be published in due course.
Plastic packaging contributes to 55% to 70% of the UK's plastic waste. The introduction of extended producer responsibility for packaging and a plastic packaging tax this April, will incentivise businesses to produce more sustainable packaging and help address this problem, as will the plastic packaging tax on plastic packaging with insufficient recycled content.
