Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what the total (a) population and (b) usable operational capacity in the adult male secure estate was in each month since August 2013.

Prison population and capacity information for every prison in England and Wales, as well as the total population and useable operational capacity of the prison estate is published monthly on the Ministry of Justice website at:

We will always have enough prison places for those sent to us by the courts and to do so in a way that gives taxpayers the best possible value for money. We are planning to open an additional 2,000 places over the next nine months. We will have more adult male prison places at the end of this Parliament than we inherited. In the next Parliament, we will open a new prison in Wrexham, providing a further 2,000 places.
