Written Answers
Television Licences: Fees and Charges
Asked by: Lord Truscott (Non-affiliated - Life peer)
Friday 24th May 2024

Question to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport:

To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the implications for TV licence fee payers as consumers who pay monthly instalments being required to pay more in the first 12 months, for both the current and subsequent annual period, than they would if purchasing a TV licence fee in a one-off annual payment; and what consideration they have given to introducing the option not to pay for the next licence in advance.

Answered by Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay - Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Department for Culture, Media and Sport)

It has not proved possible to respond to this question in the time available before Prorogation. Ministers will correspond directly with the Member.

Gaza and Israel: International Law
Asked by: Clive Lewis (Labour - Norwich South)
Friday 24th May 2024

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, if he will make an assessment of the potential implications for his policies of the joint statement by international NGOs on humanitarian law in Gaza, published by Amnesty International on 15 May 2024.

Answered by Andrew Mitchell - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) (Minister for Development)

We continue to call for International Humanitarian Law to be respected and civilians to be protected.

We have one of the most robust arms export systems in the world, enshrined in law through the Export Control Act, and implemented through our Strategic Export Licensing Criteria. The Foreign Secretary has reviewed the most recent advice about the situation in Gaza and Israel, and his latest assessment leaves our position on export licences unchanged. We will keep the position under review.

Hamas, along with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), are already sanctioned by the UK in their entirety and are subject to an asset freeze and arms embargo. The UK, working closely with the US and other allies, has imposed several new rounds of coordinated sanctions against Hamas since 7 October, to disrupt the terrorist group's financial networks and cut off their access to funding.

Mobile Phones: Rural Areas
Asked by: Lord Pearson of Rannoch (Non-affiliated - Life peer)
Thursday 23rd May 2024

Question to the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether they plan to assess the service provided by Vodafone and other mobile operators in remote areas to ensure that they are complying with their operating licences.

Answered by Viscount Camrose - Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology)

The coverage outcomes that the mobile network operators committed to as part of the Shared Rural Network and that were then added to their spectrum licences are overseen by Ofcom, with regular reporting throughout the life of the programme to ensure agreed obligations and targets are met. Compliance with these obligations will be assessed by Ofcom at the end of June 2024, by when each operator has committed to have reached 88% geographic coverage of the UK, and 2027 when each operator has committed to have reached at least 90% geographic coverage of the UK. Progress towards these outcomes is published in the regular Ofcom Connected Nations reports.
